WHAT WE SAY
Like Champagne, the wines at The Grange are all made from three grapes. The red Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and the white Chardonnay. The White from Black from the excellent 2020 vintage is made entirely from Pinot Meunier. In Champagne, you'll find Meunier is grown mostly in the Vallee de la Marne.
We love wines made with just Meunier and it's great to find an English vineyard providing a focus on the grape which tends to produce a more aromatic, fruiter style of fizz and this is a beautiful example.
WHAT THEY SAY
Normally seen as a 'filler' in France, Meunier in the cooler and wetter UK seems to thrive and to produce fascinating and complex fruit worthy of its own bottle. This release is made from 4 of our different Meunier cuvées of which 40% went through malolactic fermentation (to soften any acidity) and 52% had contact with some very gentle oak texture. It spent just 26 months on lees and was disgorged in September '23 (to allow time for tertiary development) with 7.5 grammes of residual sugar resulting in a magnificent and luxurious balance.

About The Grange
The beautiful Grange Estate is on the Hampshire Downs at the Western end of the South Downs, just East of Winchester. Owned by the Barings for 200 years it’s a real family affair which is overseen by the youngest of four siblings, Zam.
The family planted 52,000 vines in 2011 on a 30 acre south facing slope called Burgess Field which overlooks the River Itchen. Great wines are made in the vineyard and this is the perfect spot to grow great grapes with hundreds of metres of white chalk just below the surface in common with Champagnes famous vineyards.
So having planted the Champagne grape varieties of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier, Zam set about establishing a fully equipped winery and cellar and recruiting some of
the best young talent around to ensure the best wines possible were being made.
Samuel Philippot runs the vineyard having spent time in vineyards in Bordeaux and the South of France, and Harry Pickering left Gusborne to set up the winery. He’s ably assisted by Juan Montenegro who had previously worked with Emma Rice at Hattingly Valley.
